The Social Justice Project

The Social Justice Project

Frances Disney and Kfir Mordechay are credentialed teachers and UCLA grad students.

They work with Mr. Winnard in the library to give lessons and develop a curriculum with social justice issues.

On Wednesday, after a discussion of the issues in a chapter from the movie Food Inc., students posted their comments on our blog.

Other students will be invited to reply to the comments posted on the first day.

The lesson plans will be made available to the faculty after all the SJP teachers involved have looked at student work, discussed the lessons ,and made changes.

MTMS Students Attend Author Visit

Shannon and Dean Hale

Last Monday, Mia Eisendorf and Diana Plasencia visited The Westwood library to report on the author visit by Shannon and Dean Hale.
Shannon Hale has written several novels for young adults including The Princess Academy.

The couple has just released an exciting new series of graphic novels about the adventures of the action hero, Calamity Jack and a superhero based on Rapunzel.
This Rapunzel is, however, a very strong woman!

Better than the Olympics!
One of the highlights of the engaging discussion came when the Hales were asked how they came to their collaboration. The couple retold the story in an interpretive dance that ended with Dean holding Shannon aloft upside down with her feet waving over his head. They pulled off some challenging moves in a lyrical combination, but their prose is usually a bit more graceful.

Thanks to Toni Boyette, Fair Chairperson and parent, for another successful book fair.
All of our students and many adults viewed, discussed, read, shared and bought the books on display.

MTMS students interview best-selling author of "Uglies" and "Leviathan".

Last Tuesday, Four students visited Santa Monica Public Library for an exclusive interview with best-selling author Scott Westerfeld and new author Sarah Rees Brennan.
The students were Wendy Ruiz, Nanette Morales, Elena Borne, and Diana Plasencia.

When Mr. Winnard dropped them off with the SMPL bookstore manager, the young journalists and literati were rushed off to the interview room to have a private discussion with the authors.
Following the private discussion, the authors brought the young reporters out and addressed the general public in the Martin Luther King Jr. Auditorium.

A full report will be included in the next issue of "The Sharkpalooza",
the newsletter produced by Ms. Rodriguez's journalism class.

A more detailed account of the public presentation and discussion with
Scott Westerfeld will be posted soon.

Book Talk Serenade 1/28: Bookxing Match #1

During first period we provided music and a book talk on recent award winning novels.
The title holders faced off in a literary heavyweight "bookxing" match.
The Golden Compass v. A Higher Power of Lucky
Fantasy v. Realistic Fiction

Between rounds Ms. Sandoval's period one band played several pieces for the listening pleasure of 80 students.

Trond of TokyoPop introduced Dogby by the comic artist/ writer Wes Abbott
Wes may visit the Mark Twain Library in the future to discuss drawing and writing graphic novels.

There was a rush on Phillip Pullman novels at lunch!!!
